Jeremiah's Call

Jeremiah
(meditation on Tim Manson's Sunday am message
West St. Baptist Church, Dunstable, UK, 25th July 2010)
Prophet in the reforms of Josiah,
In the reigns of Jehoiakim and Zedekiah,
Kings of Judah 6-7th Centuries B.C.;
But what's this to do with me?
Jeremiah was called to speak
Even though he felt so weak,
Chosen to address a wayward nation,
To express God's indignation
For wickedness in forsaking
God, worshiping idols of their making.
God reached out His commanding hand
Touched his lips to address the Land.
Almond tree and 'pot-boiling' vision
'Coming judgement' was his mission.
"Don't be terrified", "I am with you",
"Stand and speak", "I will rescue".
So what's the relevance for us today?
We have a message in a similar way.
Called by God, given a Great Commission,
Warning of judgement is part of our mission.
We have his promise on Scripture's page
"I will be with you to the end of the age."
I sit in church and try to capture the essence of Sunday sermons in a poetic form.
These are not always appreciated by the preacher, but the process does aid concentration, and stimulates a response to the speaker's message.
